How markups work

A markup raises or lowers a shipping method's price. You can add a percentage, a fixed amount, an amount from a table, or extra packaging weight. Markups live on their own page: Markups in the sidebar (the page is titled Shipping Markups).

Before you begin

Markups, product markups and rule prices

There are three places to adjust what shoppers pay:

Where Best for
Markups page A handling fee or percentage on a whole method, often a live carrier rate
The rule's How it's priced Setting the price itself, for flat and table rates
A product's Markup Extra shipping for one product. See Add a shipping markup to a product

Real-time rules have no handling fee field of their own. To add to a live carrier rate, use the Markups page.

What a markup contains

  • Basics → Shipping method: the method it changes.
  • When it applies: optional Origin ZIP code, Destination ZIP code (one code or a range like 33400-33499), Country and States / provinces. Leave a box empty to match any.
  • Markup: one of three types:
  • Add at least … but no more than …: limits the amount the markup adds, not the shipping total.

How markups are applied

  • Only markups switched On apply.
  • They add up. If several markups match the same method and address, all of them apply.
  • Free stays free. Markups aren't added to a $0 rate.
  • Before limits. Markups are added before the method's Minimum charge and Maximum charge, and before the Rate above or below an amount trigger.
  • Origin. A markup with an Origin ZIP code applies only to boxes shipping from that origin.

A markup is tied to one rule

When you pick a Shipping method and save, the markup is saved against one specific rule of that method — not the method as a whole.

  • If that rule is deleted, the markup disappears from the Markups list and stops applying.
  • If that rule is switched off, the markup stops applying — even if other rules of the method are still on.

After you delete or switch off rules, check your markups. See A markup stopped working.

Settings that affect markups

Base table-amount markup rules on in Settings decides what an Amount markup table is based on: Package value, Order value or Shipping rate. See Global shipping settings explained.

Reading the Markups list

Each card shows the method name, an on/off switch, Edit, and ⋯ with Duplicate and Delete. Lines summarize the markup, for example "Percentage of the rate: 10%", "Minimum markup: $1.00" or "Destination ZIP code: 33400-33499".
