Add a shipping markup to a product

Add a fixed dollar amount to shipping whenever a product is in the cart, for example $5 for an item that needs extra packing. You can also use a negative amount to take money off.

The markup is added on top of the rate the shopper would otherwise pay, including a flat rate. It isn't added on a method where the product ships free.

Steps

  1. Go to Products, search for the product and select it.

  2. In the Free and flat shipping section, find Markup ("Raise or lower shipping by flat dollars").

  3. Enter the markup. Pick the form you need:

    You want Enter
$5 for each unit, on every method 5
$5 once per order, on every method 5*
$5 for each unit, on method #2 only 2=5
$5 once per order, on method #2 only 2=5*
$2 off for each unit, on every method -2
  4. Select Save Product.

The product's Markup field with 5* entered

The method number is the #1, #2… shown next to each method on the Shipping Rules page.

What "once per order" means

A markup ending in * is charged once for all products in the cart that have exactly the same markup text. Two different products both set to 5* add $5 in total, not $10.

Products with different markups each add their own. A product with 5* and another with 3* add $8.

Example

A cart has 3 units of a product with markup 5 and 2 units of a product with markup 4*:

  • Every method: 3 × $5 = $15, plus $4 once = $19 added to shipping.

If the first product's markup were 2=5 instead, $15 would be added only on method #2, and $4 on every method.

Keep the markup short. On most stores the Markup field holds 10 characters, and anything longer is cut off. If you need several markup rules on one product (for example different amounts on different methods), contact support.

For quantity tiers (a lower markup for more units) and every other form, see Product markup and flat-rate syntax.

Markup, flat rate or handling fee?

  • Markup: adds to whatever the method charges for the order. Best for an extra cost tied to one product.
  • Flat ship rates: replaces the calculated rate for this product with a fixed amount. See Free or flat shipping for a product.
  • Handling fee: an extra charge on a shipping rule, for every order that uses it. See Add a handling fee.

Set markups for many products

Use the markup column in a CSV upload, for example 1.99 or 4.5*. See Bulk-update products with a CSV file.

Check that it works

In the Shipping Estimator, run the same test cart before and after you save the markup. Each affected method should go up by the markup: a 5 markup with 2 units in the cart adds $10.
