Shipping rules and markups field reference

Every field in the shipping rule editor and the markup editor, what it does, and an example of each. For the ideas behind them, start with How shipping rules work.

Before you begin

Shared = the field belongs to the whole method: saving any rule copies it to every rule with the same method number.

Rule editor: Basics

Field Values Shared Example → result
Method name Text. Spaces at the start and end are removed. BigCommerce: up to 100 characters. Turbify: must match the Turbify method name. Yes UPS Ground → shoppers see "UPS Ground". A new rule with an existing name joins that method.
Method description Shopify: text, HTML removed, & saved as "and". BigCommerce: up to 125 characters. Yes Arrives in 3–5 business days → shown under the name.
Delivery estimate text Text. Only with a delivery-estimate add-on. Yes Overrides the global delivery estimate text for this method.

Rule editor: When this rule applies

Leave a box empty for no limit. Both ends of a range are included.

Field Compares Example → result
Weight (min to max) Weight of the products being priced (free and flat-rated products left out, unless counted in Settings). Max is also the most one package can weigh. 0 to 1 → a 1 lb cart matches; 1.2 lb doesn't.
Split the package if over Instead of not matching, heavier carts are split into packages up to the max weight. Needs a max weight; can't be used with a min weight. Max 70, ticked → a 160 lb cart is rated as three packages.
Order value (min to max) Value of the products. Coupon subtracted first if set in Settings. 75 to (empty) → an order of exactly $75.00 matches.
Distance (add-on) Miles or kilometers from origin to destination. 0 to 25 → local only.
Points (add-on) The cart's total points: product points × quantity, added up. Max 20000; 4 × 5,400-point items = 21,600 → doesn't match.

Rule editor: Where it ships

Field Values Example → result
Origin ZIP code One ZIP code. The rule applies only if a product ships from it, and prices only those packages. Your store's own origin ZIP is cleared on save. 33467 → card shows "(originating at 33467)".
Destination ZIP code One code, or a numeric range FROM-TO. 33400-33499 → 33450 matches; 33500 doesn't.
Destination ZIP codes (if turned on by support) List. A partial code matches every code starting with it; any case. 902 → 90210 matches.
Exclude destination ZIP codes (if turned on by support) List, same matching. The rule never applies to these. 995 → 99501 excluded.
Country Inside + list, Outside + list, Anywhere. Outside, United States → international only.
States / provinces All, 48 states + DC, US territories, Choose + list. 48 states + DC → not AK, HI or territories.
PO boxes Allow, Block. Block → "P.O. Box 12" doesn't match.
Residence type (if turned on by support) All addresses, Residential only, Commercial only. Residential only → business addresses don't match.

Rule editor: Products and customers

Field Effect

Exclude Customer Tag / Exclude Customer Group (add-on) Rule never applies to customers with one of these tags.
Customer attribute value (BigCommerce B2B, turned on by support) Rule applies only when the customer's attribute equals this value.

Rule editor: How it's priced

HazMat charge (add-on): an amount added when the cart has hazmat items.

Real-time

Field Values
Assigned method The carrier service whose live rate is used. Each package is rated and the rates added.
Packaging override Use Global Setting, a UPS type (UPS Letter/Express Envelope, Package, UPS Tube, UPS Pak, UPS Express Box, UPS 25KG Box, UPS 10KG Box, Pallet) or a FedEx type (Your Packaging, FedEx Envelope, FedEx Pak, FedEx Tube, FedEx Box, FedEx 10KG Box, FedEx 25KG Box, plus FedEx One boxes when available).
FedEx One Shown for some FedEx services when FedEx One is available.
Saturday delivery + Active on days Shown for some overnight and express services. The rule applies only on the ticked weekdays. No days ticked → never shows.

Percentage or flat

All filled boxes are added.

Field Example → result

Basis Amount, Amount (Percentage), Weight, Products; with add-ons Points and a distance basis.
From / Charge One tier per row. The last row whose From ≤ the value is used. Start at 0, smallest first.

Tables are looked up and charged per packed box.
